Breathing Gives Us Both Life and Slowly Damages Our Cells
Oxygen that we breathe in is a source of life, but at the same time it can cause damage in the body by creating oxygen free radicals, molecules that become unstable by losing or gaining an electron and have to balance themselves by stealing electrons from other molecules, creating a chain reaction.
Although oxidative phosphorylation is a vital part of metabolism, it produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, which lead to propagation of free radicals, damaging cells and contributing to disease and, possibly, aging (senescence). The enzymes carrying out this metabolic pathway are also the target of many drugs and poisons that inhibit their activities.
ROS/Free radicals have recently been implicated in a number of biochemical and chemical reactions in the body. Lipid peroxidation induced by free radical reaction is believed to be one of the major causes of cell damage and injuries in cell membranes. In recent years, reports have appeared citing the contribution of free radicals and active oxygen species in the etiology of various digestive diseases.
For example, gastric mucosal injuries and the increases in thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances in the gastric mucosa induced by ischemia or ischemia/reperfusion were significantly inhibited by treatment with superoxide dismutase and catalase. It has been suggested that superoxide radical or hydroxyl radical may be the major oxygen radicals contributing to ischemia or ischemia/reperfusion injury in the stomach, small intestine, and liver. There reactive species can attack and damage important biological molecules.
These oxygen-derived free radicals, indiscriminately attack vital molecules, such as proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, which are a part of every single cell in our bodies, both inside and outside the cells, changing their function and impairing the normal course of metabolism in cells. ROS are also capable of damaging DNA. When enough cells get affected this way, disease sets in.

Enter Superoxide Dismutase (SOD)
The discovery of an enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) in 1968 led to the realisation that 02 is formed in vivo in living organisms and SOD functions to remove it. Superoxide radical is less reactive than OH*-radical, but can participate in the formation of OH. Superoxide dismutase removes 02 by converting it into hydrogen peroxide (H,O,)and 0 2 . Hydrogen peroxide is not a radical but by itself may be quite toxic to cells, causing DNA damage, membrane disruption and release of calcium ions within the cells, resulting in calcium-dependent proteolytic enzyme to be activated
