While most commercially sold yogurts contain some living bacteria and might very loosely be referred to as “probiotic” for this reason, it’s definitely incorrect to think about all yogurts as being equivalent in terms of their probiotic benefits. For example, some yogurts in the marketplace may contain less than 1,000 bacteria per gram. While that number might sound large, it’s actually quite small when you are talking about bacteria.
By using Raw Milk and fermenting for 24 hours about 50% of the lactose has been consumed by the colonies, additionally Raw Milk is generally considered safe for those who are lactose intolerent, though it has not been clinically proven yet. Start slowly by drinking 10-20ml of MAFMaker drink, building up gradually through 50 to 100ml per day (0.5 bottle) or as ‘tolerated’ with food. Due to MAFMaker yogurt drink should be taken as part of a balanced nutritionally-based approach to health or as directed by a healthcare professional. Safety of Raw Milk
The Raw milk and the completed MAF Yogurt drinks MUST be stored in the refrigerator. Yogurt older than 8 days should be discarded. You should seek assurance from your Raw Milk supplier on their FSA status and read the advice on our Raw Milk Finder page.. There is a skin test from GAPS you can do to see if you might react to Raw Milk.
It is recommended that for MAFMAking you only use fresh milk within 2-3 days of milking, this is more for the quality of the end product than for safety concerns as the healthy bacteria in milk normally completely overcomes the bad bacteria within a few days.
GAPS and SCD Diets to Consider
The GAPS Diet, as it is commonly known, is a temporary way of eating (usually about 18 months) to re-balance and heal/seal the gut wall which halts the flood of toxins from pathogenic strains dominating the gut environment into the bloodstream causing an unpredictable mix of autoimmune symptoms. The autoimmune disorders significantly alleviated or healed by the GAPS Diet ranges from the simply annoying seasonal allergies, to the more life altering conditions such as autism, fibromyalgia, MS, lupus, and the list goes on and on. However, it has been found that removal of dissacharide sugars(except honey and fruit), starches, grains and inclusion of Yogurt and bone broths radically improves gut health and is an essential part of GAPS.
The SCD Lifestyle (Specfic Carbohydrate Diet) is similar to GAPS and designed to help people heal from leaky gut (Intestinal Permeability) and advise avoiding various foods, that is until it’s healed, they call the main problem foods the four horseman: Milk, Eggs, Nuts, Grains, Excessive fruit and Honey (Read about fructose malabsorption here). Yogurt and yogurt drinks are legal fortunately.
They have a book available and an extensive A- Z list of foods which they deem to be legal or illegal. The diet is simple in theory, if somewhat difficult in practice. The idea behind it is to exclude the foods that disease-creating bacteria feed on in the gut so that these bacteria die off and allow the gut to heal itself.

MAFMaker yogurt drink should swished around the mouth for 15 seconds and also gargled a few seconds before swallowing to enable greater absorption through the tonsillar ring. Also take 5000iu Vitamin D3 a day.
What to expect, Die off of bad bacteria
It is possible that you may experience detox symptoms such as brain fog, hot/cold flushes, low-grade flu like symptoms, stool colour changes. This is most likely an initial die-off of bacterial overgrowth, things will settle down though, reduce the quantity if too extreme, and gradually increase over days, but don’t quit, it’s important to find a way through this stage, drinking plenty of clean water helps too.

What is MAF?MAF is a sugar protein that acts as a Macrophage Activating Factor (MAF) in the immune system. It is part of the Active Vitamin D Molecule (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3), produced in the liver, is completely natural and the body expects it. Over 57 research papers have been published that demonstrate MAF activates Macrophages in both in vivo and in vitro studies, Macrophages are known as the ‘Big Eaters’. Macrophages function in both non-specific defense (innate immunity) as well as help initiate specific defence mechanisms (adaptive immunity) of vertebrate animals. Their role is to phagocytise (engulf and then digest) cellular debris and pathogens, either as stationary or as mobile cells. They also stimulate lymphocytes and other immune cells to respond to pathogens. They are specialized phagocytic cells that attack foreign substances, infectious microbes and cancer cells through destruction and ingestion. The MAF molecule is part of the larger Vitamin D process, and to work effectively, sufficient levels of vitamin D should be available. The vitamin D that the body finds easiest to assimilate is that produced in sunlight on bare skin. Vitamin D3 capsules or tablets should be taken where sunlight is deficient, up to 5000 iu per day. Vitamin D is a fat covered molecule so a healthy intake of good quality virgin oils such as olive, coconut or organic dairy produce such as MAFMaker yogurt drink may help the immune system. Many autistic children suffer from intestinal problems, so a diet that excludes dairy and glucose products has been shown to offer relief from intestinal problems for many patients, tho be aware most of these are pasteurised which de-natures the material. Certain probiotic yoghurt types can help to rebalance the intestinal flora, and by fermenting the culture for 24 hrs ferments out the lactose and casein elements during production and includes healthy bacterial strains that will encourage the activation of macrophages via the intestinal tract. Good results have been seen by using the two variants of macrophage activation with MAF yogurt. It's also worth noting here that in scientific notation, the number one million (1,000,000) is typically written as 106. So you might see a phrase like "106 CFUs" on package information about yogurt. This phrase tells you that the yogurt contained at least 1,000,000 viable bacterial cells at the time when it was manufactured. The use of fermented foods by ancestral cultures to preserve food, enhance nutritional value, and protect health goes back thousands of years and spans the globe. The practice served to significantly bolster immunity and increase the longevity of traditional societies as consumption of these probiotic rich foods introduced a constant stream of beneficial bacteria into the gut on a daily basis which improved digestion and nutrient absorption, discouraged pathogenic activity, and maintained top notch intestinal health. The problem, however, is that fermented foods, while potent, do not contain the correct type and therapeutic strength probiotics necessary to destroy pathogenic bacteria, viruses and fungi that have taken up residence within the intestines.Fermented foods contain lactic acid based probiotics, in other words, strains like Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus that do not aggressively attack pathogens. So what’s missing from fermented foods that a person on a gut healing diet really needs? According to Natasha Campbell-McBride MD, author of Gut and Psychology Syndrome and creator of the GAPS Diet, the soil based probiotics, and in particular, the strain Bacillus subtilis are a very important piece of the gut healing puzzle. While specific strains have been studied for certain therapeutic applications, generally it is best to make sure the probiotic you choose contains a variety of beneficial bacterial species from each of the three main probiotic types: Lactobacillus Bifidobacterium Soil based organisms (SBOs) Bacillus subtilis is a soil based organism discovered by German microbiologists during WWII. It was used to protect troops from dysentary and typhoid. Since that time, B. subtilis has been studied in depth all over Europe and Asia. Important subspecies to B. subtilis have been identified.
